AI Scribes Deliver Modest but Meaningful Reductions in Clinical Documentation Time

A multisite study of 8,581 clinicians shows that AI-powered clinical scribes reduce documentation burden by 10% and increase patient visits by 1.7%, with outsized benefits for primary care and female physicians.

Background

Electronic health record documentation remains a leading driver of clinician burnout. This JAMA study examined whether ambient AI scribing tools could reduce this burden at scale. Researchers analyzed 8,581 clinicians (1,809 AI scribe adopters and 6,772 non-adopters) across five academic medical centers from June 2023 to August 2025 using difference-in-differences analysis.

Key Findings

AI scribe adoption was associated with:

  • 16.0 fewer minutes of documentation time per 8-hour workday (10% reduction)
  • 13.4 fewer minutes of total EHR time (3% reduction)
  • 0.49 additional weekly ambulatory visits (1.7% increase)

Benefits were concentrated in specific groups: primary care clinicians saw 25.0 fewer EHR minutes, female clinicians gained 19.0 fewer minutes, and those using AI scribes in ≥50% of visits achieved 21.3 fewer EHR and 27.3 fewer documentation minutes. Notably, work outside scheduled hours did not increase significantly.

Why It Matters

These findings validate AI scribes as a real, though modest, solution for documentation burden. However, financial returns were limited—approximately $167 monthly additional revenue per clinician. Health systems should prioritize robust training to achieve ≥50% utilization and carefully evaluate implementation costs against conservative revenue projections.

Limitations

The study was restricted to academic medical centers, limiting generalizability to community practices. Individual clinician experiences likely vary substantially.
